U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $41.6 Million in Disaster Supplemental Funding to Support Economic Development Projects in Five States
WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) announced $41.6 million in Disaster Supplemental funding awards to five states, which were impacted by storms and natural disasters in 2023 and 2024.
The EDA awards announced today are:
- Mountain City, Tennessee: $22.5 million for wastewater infrastructure improvements to support industrial growth in the region following Hurricane Helene in 2024.
- Amory, Mississippi: $5.2 million for water infrastructure improvements to support business retention and expansion following tornado activity in 2023.
- Tellico Area Service Systems (Vonore, Tennessee): $5 million for a water treatment plant expansion project to support business growth in the region following severe storms in 2024.
- South Sioux City, Nebraska: $4.6 million for water, sewer, and roadway infrastructure improvements to support industrial business expansion in the region following severe flooding in 2024.
- Stillwater County, Montana: $2.9 million for wastewater infrastructure improvements to support business expansion, job creation, and private investment in the region following severe flooding in 2023.
- Tampa Bay Wave (Tampa, Florida): $1.4 million for development of a pilot accelerator initiative designed to foster economic resiliency following hurricanes Idalia and Milton.
“The Disaster Supplemental Grant Program was designed to help communities rally and rebuild their local economies following severe storm activity over the last few years,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary and Chief Operating Officer Ben Page, performing the nonexclusive duties and functions of the Assistant Secretary.“The projects we announced today support that objective. They provide an economic outline and updated infrastructure for job creation and business expansion in areas hard hit by recent natural disasters, while also increasing communities’ resilience for future events.”
The EDA Fiscal Year 2025 Disaster Supplemental Grant Program makes approximately $1.5 billion available to support economic recovery activities in areas that received major disaster declarations because of hurricanes, wildfires, severe storms and flooding, tornadoes, and other natural disasters occurring in calendar years 2023 and 2024.
